Artist statement
Canal Cheong Jagerroos | 張 彤 茹 (b. 1968) grew up in an artistic family in Macau, China, and has emerged as a prominent international artist with nearly 100 successful exhibitions worldwide. Over the past 30 years, Canal has lived and worked in a variety of countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Scandinavia, and these rich cultural experiences have profoundly influenced her artistic practice, both consciously and subconsciously.
In her work, Cheong Jagerroos masterfully intertwines symbols of the Chinese language with contemporary art, creating vivid compositions that radiate mystery and vibrancy. By layering multiple materials and techniques in her paintings, she brings forth a unique palette that reflects the interplay of past and present, as well as the fusion of Eastern and Western influences. Her art embraces themes of positive energy, peace, and harmony.
Since 2018, Canal Cheong Jagerroos’s large-scale artworks have been showcased in several esteemed art museums, including the TangBO Art Museum and Xi’an Art Museum in China; and Korundi Rovaniemi Art Museum, Joensuu Art Museum, Jyväskylä Art Museum, and Salo Art Museum in Finland.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos is the founder of the ongoing art project ”Floating Island,” which she launched in 2017. She also co-founded the Blue and Red Art Project, which ran from 2015 to 2020.
